Frequently Asked Questions

History

We were inspired by the original Great British Beerathon organised by Beer Belly Running and their legendary London-based event. As a collective we participated in their event several times and recreated it out of our back garden during Covid-times. Unfortunately their last event was held on the 20th of August 2022 and in their absence we are hoping to recreate the fun, slobtsacles and cameraderie at our Essex venue.
We are raising money for two awesome organisations - South Essex Wildlife Hospital and Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary.

If you don't want to run the Beerathon but you would still like to make a charitable donation please visit our donate page for more information.
The current record for our event is just under 50 mins. We'll call time when the last runner finishes / gives up - typically it won't last longer than a few hours.

Entry / Admin

If you notify us at least 72 hours in advance of the event we can refund you the full entry fee.
We will be unable to refund you but you can contact us at chelmsford@beerathon.org to avoid pulled pints being wasted.
We can transfer your entry to someone else up to 72 hours before the event, just email us at chelmsford@beerathon.org with your name and email address as well as the name and email address of the person you wish to transfer your entry to.
With an individual entry a single person does all the running and drinking and eating and has all the glory!

When participating as a team you can share Beerathon duties amongst yourselves mostly as you see fit, but we ask that every team member runs at least one lap - e.g. you can't recruit Mr Creosote as your designated eater, George Best as your designated drinker and a bunch of ringers from Team GB Athletics to do the running.

Teams will not get a place on the podium either - that is just for individuals - and we won't be able to track your individual lap times.

💛 You will, however, receive our undying love and gratitude for your participation in the silliness.
We do not make any money from Beerathon. The main aim is to have fun and fundraise. Your entry fee pays for 4 drinks, 4 snacks and everything left goes to two great causes - South Essex Wildlife Hospital and Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary.

Race Info

Yes - Check-in will be open from 12:15 and will be inside The Queen's Head. When you arrive, make yourself known to one of the officials (they'll be easily identifiable and the pub isn't big). Have your confirmation email ready so they can scan your QR code. They'll then give you your race number, which you'll fix to your top with safety pins. And that's it - you're race ready!
Fairly suburban, with a combination of footpaths on streets and in parks. You'll be running 5 x 1 mile laps and there will be some Beerathon-themed markings on the route to guide you. Each lap starts by going out of the back door of the pub, and each lap ends by coming in the front door. From the front door, proceed in a straight line directly to the back of the pub/beer garden where your drink and snack will be waiting for you. Please be courteous to other pub punters and negotiate the pub floorplan as you would on a casual Sunday and not at blistering race pace speed.

We have an upper limit of 30 competitors at the upcoming event.
4 pints and 4 snacks constitute the Beerathon format. Above and beyond that you are at liberty to drink as much as you want - just stay awesome!
Please do your best to keep any vomiting discreet to avoid us being a nuisance to the local community. Every runner will be provided with a vomit bag at the start of the race and must keep an unused vomit bag on their person at all times.
You sure can, just ask one of the Beerathon event staff who will identify themselves to you at some point.

🤪Yes, I know it's mental, but we are serious. If you don't drink beer and you want to participate then Milkathon it is.
With the NHS in the state its in after years of neglect by successive Tory governments we really can't give any guarantees you will survive.
Come and talk to one of the organisers on the day of the event once you've finished and we'll be happy to share your time with you!
You can wear whatever you like and fancy dress is not discouraged - last time we had a dinosaur and a few people even dressed like runners!
Beerathon runs rain, hail or shine. Please check the forecast and dress accordingly!

The Queen's Head is a great local pub with a fantastic welcoming atmosphere.
The Queen's Head sells nuts and crisps and that's about it - however...for our October 2024 event we have Embers Pizzas on-site serving wood-fired pizzas 🤤
Yes! There's a car park at the rear of the pub.
Children are welcome in the pub and at the event, but there are no formal childcare facilities. Therefore, their care remains your responsibility.
